JBO TV \ 2009-2010 and beyond
**Average fuel expense per day fishing and filming for summer 2010
$2.75--Thats all!! Heck, we spend more on bait than our fuel! Gotta love it, never thought we would see the day! Suzuki and Carolina Skiff have put the "Fun" back in boating! JB

Suzuki 90HP Four Stroke \ JVX20 Carolina Skiff with Smart Tabs
Back at the 2008 Miami International Boat Show we were at the Suzuki booth when they unveiled their new second generation four strokes, the new 70, 80, and 90 hp. A few months later JBO TV filmed the new product release in Key Largo where we shot extensive footage of these new engines and soon realized what unbelievable performers they were. The additional fuel efficiency these engines had gave me an idea, put together an incredible fuel efficient boat and engine package that would be affordable to purchase, and cost next to nothing to run.
After some research, it did not take long to figure out that for the boat, Carolina Skiff was the perfect choice. Carolina Skiff has long been known for being able to carry a large payload, requiring very little power. The boats also were unsinkable, which was a additional bonus to me. Carolina Skiff, as well as Suzuki, had long solid reputations for building the best and most durable products in the marine industry, so it seemed like a perfect marriage to me. Once I told Suzuki about our idea, and contacted Carolina Skiff, we were well on our way to rigging out what would soon be one of the best, fuel efficient boat and engine packages we have ever run. Introducing Jim Baugh Outdoors New show Boat,
The Go Green Fishing Machine!!!
What makes this boat and engine package "Green?"
Propulsion: Suzuki 90HP Four Stroke- Three star ultra low emissions

The new Suzuki 90HP Four Stroke is a Three Star Ultra Low Emissions engine. These engines have a 65% lower emissions than a one star emissions standard. (A one star emissions standard had 75% lower emissions than a conventional two stroke out board.)
The engine also features digital sequential electronic fuel ejection, a powerfull 2.59:1 final drive ratio, zero maintenance self adjusting timing chain, offset drive shaft and a new redesigned power head. This engine is the most fuel efficient engine we have ever run on our fishing boats. Now when we fill up for the day, our fuel bill is anywhere from $2.00 to $10.00 bucks for an entire day of fishing. Not only is this easy on your wallet, it is good for the environment, and less consumption of petrol is good news for everyone.

Also available from Suzuki is the smart, digital-monitor gauge. Suzuki calls this their SMIS (Suzuki Modular Instrument System CLICK HERE) . We installed this on the GGFM and found it an to be an excellent tool. An all in one "Wonder Gauge". The fuel flow info is computerized and hyper accurate, the measurement can be taken directly from the engine. The gauge also is GPS interfaced and gives accurate trip info and is displayed on a page in the gauge, very handy to have. Fantastic system. You can scroll threw the set up and choose from a large variety of pages to be called up with a simple push of a button. http://www.suzukimarine.com/sr_09/df90-80-70/
The Boat: JVX20 Carolina Skiff

Quality and affordability are a good way to describe Carolina Skiff, a proven boat manufacturer that allows great diversity within their product line to suit the most discriminating boater and angler. The economy of boating as always been an integral part of CS, a boat that simply can handle large payloads requiring not a lot of power. Travel further and faster with less fuel consumption!! A solid fiberglass boat, no trees were cut to build these hulls. Solid glass with more foam floatation than the Coast Guard requires. An unsinkable boat that is perfect for recreational or commercial applications. The JVX20 was the perfect selection for JBO TV recreational boating and fishing needs. Also plenty of room for crab pots!! http://www.carolinaskiff.com/
Tidewater Sensors: Accurate fuel measuring system

Having a super accurate way to monitor EXACTLY what is in your fuel tank is certainly a great idea, making the most efficient use of your fuel, or remaining fuel can be very important while on the water. Tidewater Sensors is the best and most accurate way to accomplish this. This versatile measuring system also can indicate weather or not there is water in the fuel tank. For more info. and how to get one for your boat click this link http://www.tidewatersensors.com/
Smart Tabs: Increase fuel efficiency 11% or greater, better boat performance.

Reduced Bow Rise (50% or less bow rise): In addition to providing a more level ride at slower speeds, minimum on-plane speeds are significantly reduced. Faster Hole Shot (15% or more quicker acceleration): The additional lift provided by SMART TABS not only reduces the minimum on-plane speed, but also maximizes the prop’s ability to propel the boat forward. Trimming the Engine—which uses the prop’s energy to correct the boat attitude—can be minimized with the use of SMART TABS, resulting in more forward thrust. Improved Fuel Economy (11% or more): SMART TABS help reduce fuel consumption and engine fatigue by creating less resistance and stress on the hull. Though fuel economy is determined in large part by the way a boat is operated, in general SMART TABS will provide a significant improvement. More info. CLICK HERE
NEWPerformance test 9\17\09-, Go Green FIshing Machine (Prop-19)

The performance test for the Go Green Fishing Machine was taken under normal sea and fishing conditions. We ran the boat loaded and rigged just as if we were heading out on a trip. Tank was full, two people on board, bimini top was up, fishing gear, anchors, etc. Note: The hull has been painted with an ablative micron.
These numbers are very impressive. The "Sweet Spot" is running between 3500 and 4000 RPM. At 3500 we are getting about 20MPH, meaning we can cross the Chesapeake Bay and back on around 5 gallons of gas, or approx. $16 bucks in fuel. Now that is crossing the bay and back! An entire day of fishing Bay wide, for less than the toll to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel by car pulling a two axle trailer! Quite fantastic!!!!

The combination of the new Suzuki four stroke power and the JVX20 Carolina Skiff is the most comfortable fuel efficient boat I have ever had the pleasure to run. For more info, click the links below.

Refit info. Pursuit 2800: All total we took the Pursuit to five locations over a span of around 13 weeks. Thanks again to Doug Whalen (now a Suzuki dealer) for the use of his trailer. Big thanks to Doug!
Deltaville VA: The Jim Baugh Outdoors Pursuit 2800 open express fisherman completed a lot of post survey work in Deltaville VA. Lamey Marine in Norfolk VA installed the latest digital Cruisair and Ice Box. The boat was purchased in Deltaville and surveyed there as well. Bud Bowen was the Broker for the boat deal, congrads to Bud for doing a fine job and letting us work on the Pursuit early.
Topping VA: Then the 2800 was transported to Topping VA where Marine Fabricators built the custom tower with second running station. Marine Fabricators also installed the Furuno color radar and sonar electronics package. This complete installation included manufacturing of the actual fiberglass top. The entire Marlin Tower was custom fitted and welded by Marine Fabricators. We also did a lot of brightwork and interior cleaning while at Marine Fabricators.
SaludaVA: After the Tower was finished the new show boat was taken to Friday's Marine in Saluda VA to be re powered with twin 140 Suzuki four stroke outboards. Fridays wired the boat for the Suzuki's and also produced a beautiful custom dash. The Pursuit was at Fridays for about 12 days.
Urbanna VA: After Fridays Marine completely rewired all electronics, gauges, and hydraulics, the boat was then taken to Urbanna VA to be finished in water. Once the boat reached Urbanna, the Marlin Tower was then reinstalled, and cabling complete. The in water installation lasted two days. The total refit and upgrades for this boat took about 13 weeks to complete.
Hampton: Once the Pursuit was in Hampton, final adjustments were made to the engine mounts br S & G Marine and the custom canvas was installed by Cooks Custom Canvas. The new marine head was installed by Bluewater Marine and our first bottom paint job we did at Sunset Boating Center. KWC marine electronics provided the final electrical wiring for all our electronics after our shake down run.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The show boat set sail for her maiden (refurbished) shake down cruise on May 25th 2003. The trip was over 60 miles to her home port of Hampton VA. On board was Bill Parkenson, Ray Johnstone, and Jim Baugh. Even with a 20 knot wind and three to four foot sea, the boat made it to Hampton in two hours.
"Before Pic"18 weeks before completion of refit, restoration, and upgrades.

Kenner 23V -JBO TV \ 1993-2000

JBO TV was happy to get the call from Colonial Outdoors, manufacturer of pontoons that are easily rigged on most any canoe. Since a canoe is still one of my favorite boats to fish out of, we really got a thrill featuring these rigs. Colonial outdoors would sell the pontoons, and completely rigged canoes as well. We did several shows on the James River with these Boats and also shot with them down in Florida. The product did work very well, and the original owner Denny Barker is still in the Hampton Roads area.
Fishin Ski Barge -JBO TV \ 1993

This was a 21 foot center console that was sent to us from Fishin Ski Barge out of AR. This was our first sponsorship with what could of been our first Salt Water Boat. Once we got the boat, we spent considerable time and money into rigging the boat, we tested it in the water and noticed the bilge pumps ran most of the time. By the time we had figured out the problem with the hull, I believe the company went out of buiz or was sold or something. Someone from AR who knew the company said that the boat we got had been sitting in someone's yard, pretty much busted. I can believe it. So, that sponsorship and boat did not last long.
What happened to the boat? True story, I gave the boat to a captain friend of mine at Smith Mt Lake. He then repaired the hull and did a nice job at the glass work. He then foam filled the entire hull. This was the first time he had tried it, and made an awful mess, but, it did fill the hull with flotation foam and the boat was used after that. Where that boat is today, I have no idea.
RIP.
Zodiac -JBO TV \ 1992-1993

That's me and my son Ben Baugh when he was about four years old cruising up the river doing a Croaker shoot. To this day, I get people ask me about that show which is now some 18 years old. Ben was quite a Croaker catcher. We had a brief sponsorship with Zodiac and featured the 13 footer as a good boat to fish in shallow rivers with. Eventually, the boat ended up holding potted plants at my fathers house on the river, then I gave it to a buddy of mine in Florida who said he fixed all the leaks. Hauling a rubber boat over an Oyster bed is not that great of an idea, so I learned.
Javelin Boats. 396 & the 409 -JBO TV \ 1989-1993
NOTE: these two pics above are not JBO TV's actual boats, but are the correct models.
Our first break in getting a boat sponsor when we first started out was with Javelin Boats who partnered with then OMC. Our hallmark boat was the 409 which was a real screamer on the water. In the early days, the show featured a lot of freshwater fishing, and the bass boats were fine. However we knew we would need a different boat for saltwater and soon we were looking for saltwater manufactures to sponsor our program. We did do things in these boats that we should not of done, like take them in the Bay in four foot seas. Fortunately, we, and the boats survived. The 396 was the roomiest of all the bass boats we had, but the boat did porpose rather badly.
The 409 Javelin was just a beautiful bass boat and was very popular. Legendary boat racer\boat builder Earl Bentz was head of the operation back then as he was in charge of Stratos and Javelin. They did a great job at building boats and still do to this day. Earl Bentz started a very popular brand of boats called Triton. It was a pleasure working with those folks back when we got started.

I was raised by my father spending the weekends on the York River on board the many boats he used to have, from a 23 Owens, up to the 36 Trojan Tri Cabin, the same boat we purchased (different boat but same model) back in 2000. Since I was a kid, I always loved white water canoeing and took many classes and trips as a youngster. Some of our first TV shows were shot in canoes and till this day some of the most exciting fishing trips I have ever been on were in my canoe. Talk about "Go Green"!
I remember sitting in my canoe with two light weight fishing rods with a eight pound catfish on one line, and 13 pounder on the other. The darn fish actually towed me around the lake for a while. Great fun!!
The picture above was from our annual canoe trips down the James River called the Pig and Paddle. We would canoe about a 20 mile stretch of the James, then end up with a pig picken back at the house in the afternoon. 1999 was the last of those annual trips.
The old canoe, as beat up as it is, still floats, fishes, and is ready for another outing.
Jim Baugh.

"Some of our favorite boats featured on Jim Baugh Outdoors tv"
Pictured Below, JBO Camerman Sean Finnegan in the Cousteau Submarine in front of the Cousteau museum on the Downtown Hampton Waterfront. No one had been in the Sub for twenty years, but they let Sean in, like a kid in a candy store. While this is not a Jim Baugh Outdoors Show Boat, it should be!! Would be fun at the Chesapeake Light Tower during Spade fish season!
Jim Baugh Outdoors was also allowed to film an onboard cooking segment on the Alcyone while it was staying in Hampton. Was one of our best cooking segments ever and the only outdoor program ever to do so. We would like to thank the Cousteau Society for working with us over the years!
